George Miles
Coach Miles was raised in Clearfield and started playing church volleyball as a 12 year old. Attending the All Church Volleyball Tournament each year was a motivation to learn to play better. In 1972 he attended the USA National Championships held for the first time ever in Salt Lake and hosted by the newly formed Intermountain Region and was introduced to power volleyball. He played and coached club volleyball at the University of Utah and the Salt Lake YMCA.
While serving as Regional Commissioner of the Intermountain Region of USA Volleyball from 1976 to 1983, he organized the first ever junior boys and girls volleyball teams in Utah to practice and travel to compete in the first ever USA Junior National Championships in Davis, California in 1980 and Omaha, Nebraska in 1981. This was the beginning of the junior volleyball revolution.
From 1978 to 1983 he was Women’s Head Volleyball Coach at Weber State University.
With Jamie Fox, former volleyball coach at Davis High School, he started Club Davis Juniors in 1994. His teams won the 16 and under Regional Championship three out of four years from 1998 to 2001, qualifying for USA Nationals. Most recently, he has coached junior teams at the Sportsplex in Kaysville and for the Northern Utah Volleyball Academy (NUVA).
In 2011 Miles organized the first ever AAU junior volleyball tournaments to be held in Utah.
He still plays volleyball, winning medals in the USA Adult National Championships, the Huntsman Senior Games, and participating in the Senior Olympic Volleyball Championships in Edmonton, Canada in 2005.
Athletes playing for Coach Miles have gone on to play at many colleges including BYU, U of Utah, Utah State, Weber State, SUU, Dixie, Snow, Delaware, Pepperdine, Wichita State, Louisiana Tech, Western Wyoming, Idaho State, Boise State, Colorado State, CEU, BYU Idaho, Utah Valley University, and many others.
